Barbourville Independent Non-Traditional Instruction Days (NTI) “Tiger Days”

Barbourville Independent

Non-Traditional Instruction Days (NTI)

“Tiger Days”

An NTI day, known as a Tiger Day, allows Barbourville Independent to provide non-traditional instruction on days when students are not able to attend school due to inclement weather.  On the designated NTI days, students will have assignments (either online or paper packets) that provide enhancement, remediation, and enrichment opportunities.  Depending on the student’s grade level, the assignments may contain lessons from reading/language arts, mathematics, and writing.  Lessons are supported with online resources but can be completed without access to the internet.

Teachers will be available from 8-12 and 1-3 on Tiger Days via school email.  Students are encouraged to email the teachers for assistance with assignments.

Tiger Days will be announced through the television, the school webpage, and the school Facebook page.

If a student is unable to complete the lesson prior to returning to school, he/she will have three days to make up the missing work.  If a student fails to submit the NTI day work on the final make-up day, the student will receive a zero for that assignment.

Calendar 2017-20182017-2018 Lunchroom Policy For Outside Food

Beginning School Year 2017-18, Barbourville Independent will no longer allow restaurant or parent food/deliveries during breakfast and/or lunch.  Our school is a full CEP school which means that all students receive FREE breakfast and lunch daily.  A cafeteria menu will be provided monthly on our school website to ensure that all students know what is being served in the cafeteria each day.  Students will be allowed to bring lunchboxes with them in the mornings but we encourage ALL students to get a meal in the cafeteria.  This policy is in place in order for our school to continue providing students with FREE meals and to guarantee the safety of each student.  If you have any questions please contact Kim Raley, Food Service Director.

Information regarding April 18, 2017 cancellation

April 18, 2017

Dear Barbourville Ind. and Knox County Families,

We are sharing this letter online to provide you with accurate information, to discourage rumors, and ask for your assistance.

On Monday evening, April 17, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office received a telephone call from an outside police agency stating that a threat had been made against Knox County, Kentucky schools.  No one particular school in Knox County was mentioned and the address provided to law enforcement was an invalid address.  The conclusion of the investigation was false information being reported and at no time was there a safety concern for our students.

To ensure that our families receive accurate information and to help us discourage further rumors and threats, the decision was made to cancel school for Tuesday, April 18, 2017.   Tuesday will be NTI Day  for students.   Barbourville students should follow the procedures for NTI days.  Barbourville teachers will be available to answer emails and upload assignments beginning at 9 am.

Please know that Knox County Public Schools and the Barbourville Independent Schools will not tolerate threats of any nature and will make decisions and clearly communicate with parents if a valid threat is found.  False reports disrupt the school day and in the end result in a loss of instruction for students.

Your child’s safety is our top priority in Knox County and we understand the concerns that you may have when false information is shared.

" A Red Carpet Affair " Formal will be held for students 6th-10th grade on Monday, April 24th 7:30 to 9:30

OPERATION PREPARATION !!! March 31 - April 4, 2014
Community volunteers who care about students’ and Kentucky’s future are the heart of Operation Preparation. During the first week in April, trained volunteer community advisors will meet one-on-one with every 8th- and 10th-grade Barbourville City student. The community advisor will use the student’s Individual Learning Plan or ILP (including career interest inventory and EXPLORE/PLAN results) to discuss the student’s career aspirations, required education/training and workforce skills and more.

Volunteer advisors will be required to complete a 30-minute online training, sign a nondisclosure form and follow all school district policies and procedures. If you are interested in being a community volunteer, please contact Marsha Hubbs.
