TIGERS WIN NEW YEAR'S TOURNAMENT

The Barbourville Tigers basketball team marched through the three day New Year's Bankers Classic Tournament to win the Championship last Saturday evening in Columbia, Kentucky at Adair County High School. The Tigers completed their sixth game in a seven-day span after winning two games of three (including a win over Whitley County) in the Cumberland Falls Christmas Tournament.
The Tigers began the Bankers Classic tournament on New Year's Day with a 72 to 48 victory over Metcalfe County of the 4th Region. Nine BHS players, with four in double figures, scored and were led with David Vance's 16 points and Chris Jackson's seven blocked shots, Travis Gregory scored 13, Casey Smith 11, and Jackson had 10. After leading 12 to 11 at the end of the first quarter, the Tigers took control of the game with strong defense and took charge to advance to the semi-finals of the winners bracket.
The Barbourville Tigers, on January 2, next defeated Edmondson County 63 to 42. The game was close throughout the first half until Matthew Cox hit an 85 feet shot at the end of the first half for a nine point half-time margin of 32 to 23. The Tigers held the Wildcats from the 4th Region to only 19 points the second half as Travis Gregory slashed his way to the basket several times to lead the Blue & White with 20 points. Vance added 17 and Jackson had 15 points.
Saturday night, in the championship match, the BHS Tigers edged the 5th Region Adair County Indians in overtime: 71 to 68. In an extremely close game throughout regulation, the score was 58 to 58 at the end of four quarters. The overtime began with both the Indians and Tigers trading baskets with Matthew Cox and David Vance hitting a three-pointer each. With 39 seconds remaining and the score tied, Chris Jackson was fouled while putting in a rebound. He then hit the free throw to give the Tigers a three point lead. The Indians came down and scored to bring them to within one of the Tigers. Jackson was fouled with 7.2 seconds remaining. He calmly sank both free-throws to seal the Championship victory. David Vance led all scorers with 36 points, including 6 three pointers. Jackson had 11, Travis Gregory had 10 and Cox added 9. Coach Phipps said, "I am very proud of the boys and how hard they played. They have played six games in seven days. We just need to continue to play hard. I am happy with this championship and hope we play well in the nights ahead". The Tigers' season record is now at 9 wins and 1 loss.
