Henry "Box" Brown (1815-1878?) - former slave who mailed himself to freedom

Your task will be to join a team of fellow classmates (your group will be chosen ahead of time by your teacher) whose goal will be to recommend to the superintendent, the school board, the principal, and the classroom teacher a list of works to be used in the newly-created African American literature course.  You will consider all of the following genres:
  • Slave narratives
  • Biographies
  • Nonfiction works
  • Poetry
  • Short Stories
  • Novels
  • Plays

In the course of your work, you and your team will complete the following:

  • Create a list of fifteen works to be included in an African-American literature anthology.
  • Describe the importance of works you choose to include.
  • Analyze works of African-American writers from a particular genre by reading the works and writing a literary analysis for each work.
  • Compose an overview/introduction to your final product.
  • Discuss your work with your class in a group presentation.

Click the "Process" button on the toolbar to your left to continue and find out more specifics about these assignments!
