Gerald B. Halter, a retired teacher and administrator from the Barbourville Independent School District left this life as we know it on April 27, 2003. He was married to Sheila (Dozier) Halter and had 2 children: Jill Owens, husband Chene, and Dawn Krohn, husband Brian. Jill has 2 children: Trey and Tori, Jerry's grandchildren whom he adored. He was a seventh grade history teacher; the high school driver's education instructor; baseball, basketball, and swim coach for many years; and Director of Pupil Personnel (truant officer). He began his teaching career in 1972, became DPP in 1978 and retired in 2000 with 27-1/3 years of service. Mr. Halter called himself an edutainer because he loved to have fun in his classes and prayed the students learned a thing or two as well! Remember the Wonder Woman jump and how he could defy gravity by hanging vertically from the pole that was in the basement of the old school building?!! As Director of Pupil Personnel he never accepted the statement, "I quit!" from a student. He did everything he could to keep youngsters and teenagers in school so they could receive an education that would help them survive in today's world. Remember the hiding places where some of you would hide thinking he would never find you? But he did!! Jerry loved life and lived it to the fullest! He will always be remembered for his wit, humor, and that he always had something to say to everyone, friend or stranger!
