Two Barbourville high school seniors participated in the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars’ program during this past summer. Kaitlyn Doan and Amanda Faulkner were among over 1,100 high school Juniors selected to attend the five-week program. Governor’s scholars are selected by a committee consisting of college admission personnel, college faculty members and educational leaders from different areas of the state. Applications are scored in four areas: academic achievement, student profile, student essay, and teacher recommendations. Students who are selected for Governor’s Scholars enjoy a free, stimulating, five-week residential summer program held at several of the state’s colleges and universities. Their assignment is based on the students’ major interest.
Miss Doan attended Bellarmine University (June 16th – July 23rd) where she studied the health care industry. She reviewed a wide variety of activities from cadavers, various hospitals, to the effects of HMOs. While at Bellarmine, she participated in the choir, did three showcases, piano and productions, and wrote the song (words and music) which was played at the final ceremony. Miss Doan said, “I would recommend this experience to everyone and those who missed it, missed out on a lifetime experience.” She is the daughter of Willie and Teresa Doan.
Miss Faulkner attended Centre College (June 26th – July 30th) where she was involved in Biology issues. She was involved in political action committees, and met with political figures such as Secretary of State Trey Grayson, and House Speaker Jody Richardson. Miss Faulkner said, “Governor’s Scholars was an amazing experience that allowed me to escape my boundaries and to meet other students with the same mind-set. I would do it again!” She is the daughter of David and Deloria Faulkner.
