BHS Golf At It's Highest

By: Charlotte Grills

I recently had the opportunity to talk with the Golf Team’s coach Mike Deaton.
He brought to my attention that five scholarships have been given to our golf athletes for the past three years. He also says that he looks forward to the possibility of two more to be given next year to the upperclassmen of the team, Billy Taylor and Zack Jones. Zack and Billy’s plans are to attend college with the hopeful scholarships they should receive next year. Zack’s average score is 35-38 and Billy’s is 36-39. As seniors next year, they plan to lead their team with “encouragement and determination.”

This year’s team is made up of six players. It includes juniors Zack Jones, and Billy Taylor, sophomores Dustin Smith, Stewart Miller, and Justin Mills , eighth grader Aaron Grubb.
As you can tell there are no seniors, yet these lowerclassmen have already won five matches this year. For the first time, every teammate is an above average golfer. As Coach Deaton expected, the team to finished out the season over 500.
The regional tournament was held September 25 and Billy Taylor finished 5th in the region. We are very proud of our above average team and hope that someday golf will be more recognized by everyone.

Cross Country

By: Brendan Smith

When you think of cross-country, do you think of long, tiring running that's not worth the effort? If yes, then there are a few individuals at Barbourville that will disagree with you: the cross-country team. This if the fourth year for Barbourville's current cross-country team and the third year that Ms. Brown has been referred to as "coach."
There were several members on our school's varsity team. The three seniors were Dustin Epperson, Mike Kunkle, and Josh Matlock. The only junior was commonly referred to as "Mr. Fitness," but we shall call him Brendan Smith. The best shot at making state came from the young, strong sophomores. James "the Machine" Morgan, Daniel Payne, and Zach Warriner were those sophomores. At the beginning of the season, we had two dedicated freshmen, but Robey Foley quit the team unexpectedly for an unknown reason. Matt Warren, however, stayed with us through the end.
Our varsity team had a rough year. There were many good opportunities to make it to state this year,
but they all seemed to fall through. The biggest factor in this was the number of injuries that our team suffered. During the second race at Bell Co., Daniel sprained his right ankle. That put his season on hold for several weeks. Then there were three more injuries that happened at the end of the season. Michael Kunkle had to be hospitalized due to his tonsils, and Josh and Zach both had trouble with their knees. There were also a couple of members that came under the weather.
On the brighter side, we did win some trophies. At the Clay County Invitational our varsity team came in third overall, and our JV team got first. The other trophy that was won was a second place trophy at Bell County's Invitational. It was won by our middle schoolers.
So, when you think of cross-country, don't think of unnecessary and tiring running. Think of hard work and determination that pays off. And to end on that note, get out there and run across the nation: go cross-country!
