Back with a Bounce

By: Tabitha King

As another school year begins, so does the training of the athletes for the 2001-2002 season. We all look forward to the progress that the boy’s team has undergone this summer. Will all their hard work pay off?
With the new year, along comes a new group of players. This year we gained a large number of freshmen from the surrounding schools. Gaining new players will be benefitial and will help to invoke more teamwork.
When talking to coach Dinky Phipps, he told me a few expectations of this coming season. He expects his team to “play hard every night and do what it takes to win a game. If we do that then the results will be very good.” However, he believes “it’s hard to predict the outcome of a season until we get a few games under our belt”. He foresees that the strong part of the leadership will come from the senior players.
When asked about his freshman, he replied, “when the freshmen learn the system, they’ll be a good crop”. He isn’t sure of his starters because he doesn’t have a complete roster yet. He did say that he expects his bench to be a lot stronger this year.
This article wouldn’t be complete without some perspective from the team. I had the chance to talk to senior guard Richard Tye. I asked Richard about his expectations. He responded, “I think we will do pretty good, because all of the hard work from practice will carry over into the season.” Richard also stated that “I feel the underclassmen may need a little time to get into the rhythm and style of ball that we, the upperclassmen, play. They do show true potential though.”
I haven’t had the chance to see the team in action. From what I hear, however, we are all in for a season to remember!

Career Day 2001

By: Brendan Smith

Every year we have our career fair. This year was a big success in comparison to year past. The students all seemed to enjoy the presentations that our guests were kind enough to give.
Several people came who have attended previous career days, but they all brought something new and exciting. First there was Betty Cole. She presented on crafts. It was very insightful. Chris Brewer came to us from Barbourville Utilities. Danny Johnson told us all about the hospitality services. We had Darrell Horn and Diana Musgrave make the trip from Kentucky Technical Vocation School. Dr. Tammy Smith talked about the veterinary services. Mr. Greg Helton came from Knox Circuit Court. To talk about Knox County Extension Services was Jerina Edington and Kevin
Rossman. For all those future architects, Mr. Judd Hubbard came. Knox County Hospital sent Janet Kreft, who gave us lots of interesting information about the medical field. The Honorable Jim Stewart was kind enough to come and speak about politics. Giving a nice speech in Business education was Mr. Michael Breeding. He came to us from Sullivan University. One of three professors representing Union college was Dr. Jim Garrett. Sgt. Falconberry gave lots of information on entering the Army Reserves. For everyone interested in law enforcement, there was trooper Buddy Simpson to present on that subject.
During third period, we all had our free choice, even though some of us didn’t get our first choice. Sgt. Falconberry, Janet Kref
Danny Johnson, Trooper Buddy Simpson, and Michael Breeding all spoke at these sessions. Linda Floyd came to tell us that we could earn dual credit for high school and college. From Datatrac, Marietta Mills told us how to find positions locally and how to be qualified for that position. To teach us about careers in retail merchandising, Michelle Lazanski came to us. She is a JC Penny’s manager. Are you right for the National Guard? Well, Sgt. Keith Hembree was there to tell us about it. Dr. Rebecca Pettys and Dr. Thomas Mcfarland were there to present careers that are available in the acting and musical fields.
With all the presenters and all of their topics, it’s no wonder why Career Day 2001 was a big success. With all the information, we should all be big successes!
