Often times the elementary schools in America are not really that active. However, that is not the case with Barbourville Elementary. “This year is going real well,” states Mr. Middleton, principal.
Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001 a spirit of unity and helpfulness swept through our nation. Barbourville’s elementary students were no exception. They diligently did what they could to aid with the relief effort by donating all of their loose change to the Red Cross.
The catastrophic occurrences, however, have not stopped us from going about our daily lives. For example, our swim team is in full operation. In previous years, the swim team was only open to people from the middle and high schools. But, this year it is also open to the elementary. This is in the hope that there will be a lot of swimmers that will start in the early grades and stick with it through their entire Barbourville school career.
This year the environmental camp for the 4th and 5th graders was also a big success. Their activities included a snake exhibit, a plant study, and a session prepared by teen volunteers followed by lunch and time for a free swim. This year’s teen helpers were Sean Cole, Tonya Gray, Brendan Smith, and Brandon Williamson.
