Actress in the Making

By: Frankie Hammons

Angela Centers, a B.H.S. senior, spent this past summer at an intensive three-week program designed to give students a better understanding and appreciation for the arts. Angela, the daughter of Terry and Sharon Centers, was accepted to the Governor’s School for the Arts in the discipline of acting.      The Governor’s School for the Arts, also known as GSA, gives high school sophomores and juniors a hands-on opportunity to experience the arts from acting to dancing. Angela was chosen for this program from a handful of talented applicants from all over the state. In order to be accepted, she was required to turn in an application along with school recommendation to the GSA office. Angela also attended an audition and review session at Transylvania University this past March. By April, Angela received the good news of her acceptance to GSA.

The program was held at Transylvania during the weeks of June 17 through July 7. Angela has dreamed of becoming an actress since she was a young girl and says that GSA increased her interest and helped her to become more focused on her future. When asked if she would recommend the program to others, Angela answered with an enthusiastic “Yes!” She says, “GSA is unlike any other experience I’ve ever had. It’s almost indescribable. You spend three weeks with other people who are focused on their art just as much as you are. Being at GSA made me want to improve myself as an actress, and at the same time it helped me gain a better appreciation for other art forms and introduced me to more of these art forms.      Angela, congratulations on attending GSA and good luck with your future plans.

From the Superintendent ..........................Larry E. Warren
This has been an extremely busy autumn for the Barbourville City Schools in all respects. Our board, councils, staff, parents, and teachers continue to work at improving the performance of our students. We, together, are raising student achievement levels. Each of our schools have completed a voluntary scholastic audit review which pointed out our specific strengths and weaknesses. I urge everyone to strive for familiarity with Kentucky’s Standards and Indicators for School Improvement. The standards are posted on our Web site home page as a link to the Kentucky Department of Education. Our golf, swimming, and girls’ & boys’ basketball teams are in full swing. The construction of our gym continues every day as this has been an extremely dry and warm fall season for our building process. I thank everyone for enduring the inconvenience related to the construction activities. Look at our Web page for updates on construction progress.
Our small school system has endured a tremendous loss of personal family members recently due to death. Several of our staff have lost their immediate relative. During this season, I especially think of these families: Jacob Aaron Crawford, Roger Deaton, Mary Helton, Don Jackson, Flem Phipps, Dorothy Reams, Warren Robbins, “Granny” Tye, John Tye, and Astor Mills.      I wish everyone a sense of peace, a pleasant winter season, and happy holidays!
