Focus on the New Faculty . . .

By: Aleshia Issacs

This year at Barbourville City School we have eight new teachers. Each teacher brings a different teaching approach to our students.
Taking over the wheel for the Drivers Education Class is Mr. Faulkner. He has taught at Whitley County High School and Williamsburg High School before joining us. He also works for the Department of State, is a Federal Security Officer, and is active with the GLP program for Knox Central High School and the Harlan County Schools.
Lori Jones is an alumni of Barbourville High School she graduated in 1993. She is returning to our school to teach Business technology and keyboarding and will be working with the Gifted and Talented. Mrs. Jones attended Union College before completing her degree at Eastern Kentucky University.
We have two new teachers in the Special Education Department. In the High School we have Brian Bohl. Mr. Bohl is a graduate of Union College where he played baseball. He is offering his talent to the B.H.S team this year as head coach. In our Elementary School we have Jennifer Worley. Mrs. Worley has actually been teaching in the High School for the past two years and only transfered to the Elementary School. She is a graduate of Barbourville High School and Union College.

Teaching Social Studies is a former student of Barbourville High School, Josh DeBorde. Mr. DeBorde graduated in 1998 and was the valedictorian of his class. He graduated from Union College. Along with teaching he will be coaching our Tennis team and the 7th and 8th grade basketball teams.
Micki Erslen returns to Barbourville High School this year as a teacher in the Math Department. She was a student teacher under Mrs. Hammons while she was attending Union College. Mrs. Erslen is a native of Knox County and graduated from Knox Central High School and Union College. She taught math in Ohio for seven years. She returned to Barbourville with her family this past April.
Although she is not new to our school we have Sarah Bennett teaching in the Middle School. Mrs. Bennett is a native of the Boston, Massachusetts area. She will be teaching our 7th and 8th grade English classes. Mrs. Bennett randomly picked which state she wanted to visit by throwing a dart into a map of the United States. She came to Kentucky to visit for a month then went back to Boston for three months and then decided to move back here to live and teach.
Joining our Elementary school staff this year is Janet Jones. Ms. Janet Jones feels extremely fortunate to be able to work at such an incredible job. A job where she can teach students sports in a fun and interactive

environment. Ms. Jones will be the new Physical Education teacher/AR Coordinator and the coach for the Lady Tigers Basketball and Softball teams. Ms. Jones stated, “I love my job, and it keeps me busy.” She was a 1995 graduate of Knox Central High School where she was a star on the basketball court. She attended the University of Dayton for two and one-half years before returning to Union College in Barbourville. She is a 2000 graduate of Union College. Her love for her job is evident in the enthusiastic manner in which she approaches teaching and coaching.
Another new addition to the Barbourville High School foreign language staff is Spanish teacher Mrs. Addington. Mrs. Addington graduated from Morehead State University. She has traveled to Spain, Africa, and Mexico. Mrs Addington is married and has three children.
A new face in the Elementary School is Beth Mills. Ms Mills enters her first year here with an enthusiastic attitude and many new ideas. She will be teaching 5th and 6th grade science. Ms. Mills is a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee.
With the new faculty members at Barbourville, the students are sure to be exposed to more diverse teaching styles that in turn will help to increase our growing reputation as a strong school.
