How to Pick the Right College

By: Frankie Hammons

It is never too early to begin your college search, whether you are just entering high school as a freshman or you are a senior ready to venture into the “real world” as soon as you receive your diploma in May. Choosing the college you will attend is perhaps one of the most important decisions you will be faced with as a teenager. “How do you begin this search?” you may ask. You must start by finding out what is best for you by using a simple checklist:

               1.) Academic interest
               2.) Sports/ Extracurricular activities
               3.) Location
               4.) Size

To begin, it is a given fact that you must choose a college that offers a program of study that meets your academic interest. If you plan to become a doctor, you don’t want to choose a two-year vocational school.
Extracurricular activities also play an important role in the academic institution you choose to attend. If you enjoy sports, check out the intramurals that are offered. If you are the social type, check out the clubs that are available to you.

The way I look at it, there are three types of locations to chose from where college is concerned: one close enough to live at home, one close enough to come home on weekends, or one so far away that you can forget about home for awhile.

Size is also an important factor to consider. Being from a school as small as BHS, it may be a shock to some of us to immediately begin college at a huge university, while others could easily adjust to the change in size.

Once you have used the checklist to narrow your choices down, you need to collect all of the information possible on the choices you have made. Talk to people you know who have attended or are presently attending these schools. Check out the credentials of the college and plan a visitation day. Be sure to look at the housing if you plan to live on campus.

As high school students, we tend to delay thinking about our college choice, but if we just follow this simple checklist it will make our decision much less painless. College is a good thing. Don’t make it your enemy.

Learning Kentucky Style

By: Katy Jones, Instructional Supervisor

What a marvelous time to be a student in the state of Kentucky! Educators in the state of Kentucky have spent the past ten years looking at what students need to know in order to live productive lives upon leaving high school. Because of the vast knowledge and information that is available to students, teachers and students must be very selective with learning time. Research indicates that choosing what to learn is not so much at stake, but more importantly how to learn. Students learn at greatly differing rates and in greatly differing ways. Therefore, the most outstanding task for teachers in today’s schools is to teach students how to learn and help them find they way they learn best.
Though Kentucky Schools have a great deal of freedom in choosing curriculum (or what kids learn) there are certain skills and concepts that all schools are required to teach. So why is this such a great
time to be a student in Kentucky? Because, not only are we held to skills and concepts that are considered to be national standards, but, we also are given an explanation of the standards. Over the past few months, teachers and parents from across the state have thoroughly analyzed the standards our students are held to and have written performance descriptions for each level of learning. The Performance Level Descriptions give students an exact picture of what a Novice, Apprentice, Proficient or Distinguished student should look like. The goal for all students in the state of Kentucky is Proficiency by 2014.
Once a student understands how to learn and what level at which he or she is expected to perform, all the student has to do is apply herself or himself to the task! Like I said, “what a marvelous time to be a student in the state of Kentucky!”
