Union College Leadership Day

By: Londa Nicole Williamson

Last Wednesday, November 7, 2001, all the juniors and seniors were invited to go to Union College for Leadership Day. We left school in the morning at about 9:30 and walked to Union College. We knew we would be going to three different workshops while we were there. The workshops were “Survivor”, “The Real World”, and “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire”.
These workshops were designed to help us prepare for our futures. The first workshop I went to was “Survivor”. There we were put into groups and given a paper with a list of several items on it. We were told to pretend we were lost in the ocean on a rubber raft. Our tasks were to put the list of items in the order we thought were most important to survive. Aside from myself, my group consisted of Shane Bingham, Jerry Johnson, Richard Tye, and Alicia Issacs. My group got only one item in the correct order. The winners of the game were given Lifesavers candy. When the instructor asked what the game we played had to do with real life, I won a Union College T-shirt for the correct answer. The answer was that we have to survive in life.
Next went to the “Real World” workshop. There we were shown the inappropriate way to conduct yourself in an interview by viewing a short skit. We were given Hershey kisses when we were able to tell the instructor how the lady should have acted during her interview. When asked for the seven keys to success, the students were given the chance to pull a key out of a box. Brendan Smith won a Union College T-shirt when the key he had chosen fit the lock.
The last workshop I went to was “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”. This one showed us

how our education affected our financial futures. During this workshop we were asked questions just like on the “Millionaire” show. A variety of prizes were given out. Brendan Smith won another Union College T-shirt, Johnny Dixon won a Union College ink pen, I won a Union College neck chain, and several other students won prizes like ours.
After the workshops it was time for lunch. Union served us its famous pizza and cookies. I thought the food was delicious but a little cold. During lunch an unnamed somebody thought it would be a good idea to climb on the roof to retrieve a football.
We were also given a tour of the campus by an alumist named Billy (or was it Chris? Ha, Ha!). The tour was very exciting and consisted of a visit to the Union College coffee shop. After paying for our coffee and cappuccinos, which did not live up to our expectations, we ventured to the science building. After touring this spot, we then saw a dorm room and the administration building.
Following our tours, the staff announced the winners of five scholarships. Three people from Barbourville High School received one of these. Those students were Jamie Beverly, Lydia Griffith, and Billy Taylor. Two students from Lynn Camp won scholarships; they were Denise Smith and Brandi Brock.
The day was full of exciting events, and I honestly had a blast while I was there. I found it very informative of the many aspects of college life. The workshops were very helpful in survival skills for the future. Many thanks to the Union College staff, students, and alumnist for the fun filled day they provided us with!
