Officers: President: Anne Pedersen Vice-President: Brandi Mills Secretary: Robin Jones Treasurer: Margaret West Dear City School Parents, On behalf of the Barbourville City School PTO, I would like to wish you a Happy Valentine's Day! Thank you to all the staff, parents, Jr. Beta Club, OM, and PTO members for helping out at the Elementary School Valentine's Dance on Feb. 10th, 2012. It was a big success and we sold 145 tickets! A special thank you to Mrs. Margaret West for making the awesome dance DVD. You can support our PTO by joining for $1, and by coming to our meetings on the 1st Thursday of each month in the Tiger's Cafe at 3:15p.m.. They usually last one hour with childcare and refreshments provided. Besides helping to raise money for our school's technology fund, I am so pleased to announce the following programs that are sponsored by the Barbourville City School PTO: 1) Bright Star Touring Theatre from North Carolina will perform Harriet Tubman in the Old Gym on March 20th for our students from 4th to 8th grade. This performance is paid for by a grant from the PNC Foundation, written by the Knox Arts, Crafts & Humanities Council. 2) Our students in Kindergarten and 1st grade will be attending a presentation from award-winning author/illustrator Jeri Landers (www.jerilanders.com) in the Rector Little Theatre in Union College during the Redbud Festival on April 20th. Mrs. Landers will read an excerpt from her latest book, Mamsey Bear & Mopkin, due to be published this summer. She will share with the children the process of writing and illustrating a book, as well as her love of nature, animals, country-life, and traditional folk art. You can pre-order an autographed copy of her book after the show for $23 (including tax & shipping). 3) Our 2nd & 3rd grade students will be attending a story-telling and music presentation by Linda Oxendine Douglas & Leann Butler in the Outdoor Stage on Friday, April 20th. They will hear the autoharp and dulcimer as well as listen to Appalachian tales. 4) The 4th & 5th graders will get to participate in square-dancing and storytelling, conducted by Master storytellers Russ and Barb Childers on Friday, April 20th as well. All the Redbud storytelling events are sponsored by the GFWC/KFWC Barbourville Jr. Woman's Study Club, the Knox, Arts, Crafts & Humanities Council, and the Barbourville Rainbow Center. 5) The 8th graders will be attending the annual fieldtrip to Frankfort to witness how the legislature functions. This will be paid for by the Barbourville Rainbow Center and PTO funds. 6) Dr. Larry Newquist, Professor of Astronomy from the University of Cumberlands will return to conduct a program in his mobile Planetarium to our students from pre-school to 6th grade. The students will get to learn all about stars and constellations inside a giant inflatable in the Old Gym. Time & date TBA. That's an update on what our PTO has been planning for our kids and I would love to hear your input on how to make our school a better place for teaching and learning! |
