STUMBO SPEAKS AT TREADWAY ACTIVITY CENTER DEDICATION

Kentucky House of Representatives Majority Floor Leader Greg Stumbo delivered the dedication address to over seven hundred people on Sunday afternoon, the 23rd of June, 2002. The temperature outside was near ninety while the air conditioning on the inside of the gym worked exceptionally well - - - some said too well.

Majority Leader Stumbo who is a native of Floyd County spoke of the need to continue improving East Kentucky and for us to be proud of our lives and heritage. He was the key leader in securing funding (three million dollars) for the Barbourivlle High Treadway Activity Center. He has been unwavering in his efforts to protect Kentucky' natural resources. Stumbo has staunchly endorsed legislation to control roadside litter and illegal dumping. During his tenure in the General Assembly (currently serving his 11th term) Stumbo was involved in the passage of such important legislation as: Major Education Reform, Campaign Finance Reform, Increased Penalties for Habitual Domestic Violence Offenders, Primary Sponsor of State Lottery Legislation, and Workers' Compensation Law Reform.

The Activity center seats 1750 and includes two English classrooms, health classroom, resource room, two team dressing rooms, two Physical Education locker rooms, men and ladies' coaches offices, weight room, and storage. The Activity Center is air conditioned throughout.

The Activity Center is named for Shirley F. "Buck" Treadway, who has been Chairman of the Board since January 1967 (a state record). He was first elected to the Board in November 1960 when he ran on a campaign to save the Barbourville Independent Schools from consolidation. Through the years, Mr. Treadway has made various trips to Frankfort to prevail upon the authorities that this school system could survive and be a producer of outstanding students. In 1993 he was chosen as the outstanding board member in the state of Kentucky. He has been present at the construction of all our existing buildings on the school campus, including the 1937 gym. He was a star basketball player for the Tigers. His 1944 team defeated the Harlan Green Dragons (the eventual state champions) in one of their three losses that season.
