Barbourville City School Cafeteria Project
"Tiger Cafe'"

Tiger Cafe' Sponsors

Dear Barbourville City School Alumni, Business Leaders, and Community Members,

I am presently the School Food Service Director for the Barbourville City School as well as a 1977 graduate. Our school has played a vital role in the history of our community for over 100 years. We are continuously looking for ways to improve our school system as well as meet the needs of our students.

We have received Board approval to look for ways to improve the atmosphere of the school cafeteria as well as look for possible fund raising activities for such a project. Visits to other school districts have been made looking for possible ideas for such a renovation. We have an idea which would easily tie in our school's past with our future for years to come.

Plans are to transform our present cafeteria in to "The Tiger Cafe". Our school is so rich in heritage and memories which should be preserved and presented in a special way. Plans are to use school memorabilia throughout the years to adorn our cafeteria walls. There is definitely excitement growing in anticipation of such a transformation taking place.

We wish to emphasize both academics and athletics as well as promote school spirit. Items such as old and new photos, school jackets, uniforms, school pennants, license plates, trophies, awards, yearbook etc... would be displayed. Owners of items will be identified. Wall mounted cases with locks (approx. $5,400) will be installed to display items which need to be secured. Such items could be changed periodically. As you can see, the possibilities are endless.

Plans include putting cafe style canopies over the inside windows as well as the tray return area. These canopies will have a tiger logo on them and the canopy at the tray return area will also be inscribed with "The Tiger Cafe". The cost for such canopies is approx. $2,400. We would also like to have a tiger mural at the main entrance. The cost of such a mural is approx. $1,500. Other foreseen expenses would be for copying and framing photos and returning items on loan. Any photos which individuals wish to have copied on their own would be very much appreciated. Future plans include Tiger Cafe signs at the two doorways which are entered from the hallway. We are also looking at additional artwork, new menu boards, neon signs, ceiling fans, and specialized seating if feasible. Future plan expenses will be investigated as the project progresses.

Phase 1 of this project will be the addition of the canopies, the tiger mural, and the display cases with surrounding artwork. We would like to have as much of the renovation completed as possible when the students return from summer vacation in August.

If this project is to be successful, we will need your help. A fund raising campaign has begun and all contributions received will definitely be appreciated. Any individual or business who donates at least $100 or more, may select an individual's name or the name of their business to be included on our Club Sponsor Wall.

It is almost overwhelming to think of the task at hand. We welcome those who are interested to serve as representatives on the Cafeteria Project Committee. Individuals should contact me before sending any items to school due to the fact that our space is limited and to avoid duplication of items. Please send any mailing addresses which you have in your possession for those individuals which you are unable to contact through e-mail.

This project is an investment in the lives of children. It will affect all students of our school system for many years to come. Our goal is to create a space which they will be proud of and identify as their own. It's time to showcase our students, former and present, and their accomplishments. It also gives our alumni, our business leaders, as well as other members of our community an opportunity to walk down memory lane and remain involved in our school. Any financial support or memorabilia items which are donated or loaned will be very much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Jayne B. Todd
