Tiger Care Club Brings New Community Service Possibilities to Barbourville Elementary
by Rachel Medlock

This year, Barbourville Elementary School has a new way to promote community service projects - the development of the Tiger Care Club. Under sponsors Angie Mills and Ginger Hall, the Tiger Care Club plans to perform various community service projects throughout the school year. These projects include donation drives, nursing home visits, and many other constructive activities. Mills and Hall state that the focus of the club will be "promoting community service to build citizenship skills."

Although Barbourville High School has a Service Club, the Tiger Care Club is unique for two reasons: it is offered exclusively to the elementary school and there is a greater degree of involvement required. In their admittance to the club, students agree to participate in every project, even those to be completed outside of school. While that may seem like a big commitment for young students, it is helpful that the students participating in the club are those that the sponsors describe as "students who display leadership qualities and will strive to make a difference in their community."

The club has already been successful in the recent trip to a nursing home. Currently the Tiger Care Club has 26 members.
